In my efforts to become knowledgeable about the fragrance industry I decided to do some research to find the top women’s fragrances. The list contained some surprises. Three of the top five women’s perfumes and eau de toilettes that I came across more than once in my research were more than 30 years old.
The oldest fragrance on the list is by Guerlain, L’Heure Bleu which translates “Little Blue Hour”. This timeless fragrance was launched in 1912 and will soon celebrate it’s 100th birthday. How’s that for longevity? L’Heure Bleu is a floral scent with a blend of Floravanilla, Carnation, Iris and Neroli.
Next in age is Chanel No. 5, launched by Coco Chanel in 1921. Although second in longevity Chanel No. 5 is considered by many to be the top women’s fragrance of all time. This famous women’s fragrance is classified as a refined, floral, soft fragrance and was a personal favorite of Marilyn Monroe.
At number three in age is Creed’s Tuberose Indiana, a soft floral, feminine fragrance launched in 1980. This hand made fragrance is a blend of Tuberose, Ambergris and Amber. Creed, Tuberose Indiana is worn by Goldie Hawn Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Then we have Eau de Dolce Vita perfume launched by Christian Dior in 1998. Eau de Dolce Vita is a refreshing fruity, flowery fragrance. Top notes include pear tree blossoms, Mandarin, Bergamot and Grapefruit. Charlize Theron and Kristin Scott are among famous wearers of Eau de Dolce Vita. According to a review 9/29/2005 this fragrance has been discontinued in the United States but is available online.
Completing the list is Bulgary Pour Femme launched in 1998. Bvlgari Pour Femme is a sophisticated and sensual fragrance with notes of Jasmine tea, Mimosa, fresh flowers and Prelude Rose. This EDP is recommended for evening wear.
Interestingly enough none of the top five fragrances were launched in this century and four out of the five are French.
